Switched Token Ring Networking

Madge switching solutions provide a comprehensive range of managed Token Ring products for integration into both the workgroup or backbone side of your network. All of the Madge switching products are highly configurable and scalable to the requirements of both your Token Ring and Ethernet environments and they also integrate the facility of bridging to Ethernet alongside High Speed Token Ring (HSTR) for both client and backbone connectivity.

High Speed Token Ring Switching

Through integrating all common types of networking topology into the switch, Madge have developed a product set that provides the users of Token Ring an affordable way to protect and develop their existing network investments. Token Ring continues to provide many large organisations with a high performance, naturally resilient networking solution; and the adoption of 100 Mbps speeds to the desktop resolves the limitations placed on the Token Ring infrastructure by some data intensive applications. Further to this, the Madge Token Ring strategy has introduced Gigabit speeds into its core switches, this when combined with 100 Mbps client connections offers enterprise customers a simple and future proofed way to extend their networks whilst also enhancing the overall ring speed.

Integrating and Migrating to Ethernet

Alternately, some Token Ring users are looking towards Ethernet for future network expansion. The amalgamation of the two network topologies requires a device to 'bridge' between them. Bridging is not a new concept in Token Ring, and Madge offers the facility to bridge between Token Ring and Ethernet ports using highly efficient translational switching at both the core network and the workgroup level!

These technologies allow organisations with a view of fully migrating to Ethernet to formulate a steady and controlled migration strategy. The deployment of translational switching at the core using a product from the Madge Ringswitch family enables the migration separate areas of the network over time whilst still retaining full and un-compromised network connectivity for all clients - regardless of which topology they connect through.

  • Madge Smart DeskStream (58-30)

The Smart DeskStream is the market leading solution for high-performance managed Token Ring switching and is targeted at the workgroup level. It boosts networking performance on the ring and is adaptable to provide both Ethernet, 100 Mbps Token Ring and ATM connectivity through modular expansions.

This unit provides a low-risk alternative to standard hubs and MAU's and offers the best network performance for the lowest possible price but will also integrate seamlessly with existing Token Ring infrastructure.

Another distinguishing feature of the DeskStream is its stackable interface. Up to 8 Smart DeskStream devices may be stacked together to provide in excess of 200 users with resilient, secure and manageable Token Ring connectivity. The stack can then be connected into a Madge Ringswitch using any combination of ATM, HSTR, 16/4 Token Ring or Ethernet over either wire of fibre media. This allows the workgroup low-latency access to the network backbone.

  • 24 auto speed sensing Token Ring ports
  • Stackable up to 8 units high, providing support for over 200 user ports
  • Integration with Ethernet through optional interface modules
  • Support for Source Route and Transparent Network traffic
  • Up to two 100 Mbps High Speed Token Ring ports
  • Internal RMON probe and port mirroring
  • Easy to use management and traffic profiling

  • Madge Smart Ringswitch Express Select (58-50)

The Smart Ringswitch Express Select from Madge is a fully featured, highly customisable Token Ring based switch. It is predominantly intended for installation onto the small or medium network backbone, but would also be suited to installation in a high performance workgroup or network branch solution.

The unit is fully manageable using the madge device management application, Trueview/32 which also can be used to analyse traffic throughput and overall performance throughout the LAN. The main chassis features three independent slots that can be occupied with modular connectivity boards; any combination of these can be used concurrently to create a cost effective switch configuration that is closely matched to the requirement of the networking situation. Modules available for this chassis include 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet, ATM backbone connectivity, 16/4 and 100 Mbps Token Ring and Layer 3 switching. The unit includes an inbuilt CPU to facilitate high speed Token Ring and translational switching onto a Gigabit network backbone.

  • Support for up to 24 switched Token Ring ports
  • Gigabit and 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Integration
  • Token Ring modules with support for both fibre and copper media
  • Active broadcast control and full RMON management
  • Advanced protocol filtering options
  • Layer 3 IP services
  • Supported by the Madge Trueview/32 Management software package
  • Integrates with Ethernet, ATM and Gigabit IP network backbones

The chassis also has an inbuilt provision for dual redundant power supplies to offer the highest resilience against power failure and network downtime. The switch can be configured to provide high speed translational bridging between Token Ring and Ethernet networks at up to Gigabit speeds and modules can also be installed to provide HSTR and ATM connectivity. The versatility of the Ringswitch range is such that most network interfaces are available over both copper and fibre media, in addition to this, the range has been designed so that modular boards for the Ringswitch Plus are fully compatible with the Express Select, further protecting your investment in Token Ring infrastructure.

  • Non-blocking cut-through switching for up to 36 Token Ring ports at 16/4 Mbps
  • True low-latency Token Ring switching for up to 30 ports at 100 Mbps
  • Active broadcast control and full RMON management
  • Supported by the Madge Trueview/32 Management software package
  • Integrates with Ethernet, ATM and Gigabit IP network backbones
  • Dual power supplies for high resilience and availability
