Following a Successful January Event
Syscomm & IBM Returned to the Innovation Studio
This Time with a Deeper Focus...
The response to January’s “Defending Your Data” event was overwhelming. Attendees left with clearer direction, practical takeaways, and fresh ideas they could implement immediately and the feedback made one thing clear: there was appetite for more. So we came back. Same iconic venue. Same partnership. Deeper conversations.

Same Iconic Venue. Deeper Conversations.
What a fantastic start to the year it was at IBM’s Innovation Studio. January’s event brought together technology leaders, security professionals and resilience champions for a day that was universally praised as practical, insightful and refreshingly clear. The discussions were interactive, the questions were thoughtful, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Many attendees shared that they left with clearer direction and fresh ideas they could implement immediately.
Building on that success, Syscomm and IBM returned in April with updated intelligence drawn from Syscomm’s growing experience across 200+ ransomware recoveries, a sharper focus on the questions every organisation should be asking its cloud provider, and a live demonstration that left the room in no doubt about what real cyber resilience looks like. The partnership with IBM continues to go from strength to strength, and the April session proved there’s real value in bringing these conversations back with fresh perspectives and deeper insights.

Core Message - Defending Your Data, April 2026
We were joined by an outstanding line-up of IBM experts who made the sessions practical, insightful, and refreshingly clear:

Neil McGovern on the Scale of the Risk
Neil opened the session reinforcing what the data already tells us: a 95% likelihood of a cyber incident within three years, 94% of backups targeted during attacks, and financial impact routinely running into the millions.
The key issue? Traditional disaster recovery was never designed for cyber events.
IBM FlashSystem — Built for Cyber Resilience
Protect: Quantum-safe encryption & immutable, tamper-proof snapshots.
Detect: AI-driven anomaly detection at disk level: detection in seconds, not days.
Recover: Known clean recovery points with restoration measured in seconds.
Syscomm’s Approach
Why Syscomm Took a Different Path
Chris Tyler explained that Syscomm’s decision to adopt FlashSystem internally was driven by real-world experience, not vendor alignment. Unlike many MSPs, Syscomm uses the same platforms it recommends to clients.
“Would we trust this to recover our own business?”
Syscomm’s Infrastructure Design Principle
Key Risks Identified
- Risk
No Immutability
Backups without immutability are routinely compromised during attacks.
- Risk
Slow Recovery
Recovery processes are rarely tested under real conditions.
- Risk
Exposed Storage
Storage platforms are often accessible to attackers.
- Risk
False Security
Cloud environments assumed secure without validation.

Question You Should Be Asking
If you are using a cloud provider or MSP, you must ask:
- What platform is my data actually sitting on?
- Are backups immutable, or can they be deleted?
- How quickly can I recover and has it been tested?
- Is detection happening at the right layer, or only after impact?
- Who is responsible when recovery fails?
